Without any intention of being racist (since I'm a Punjabi, but i love all other communities also)...Don't most of us love one thing about Punjabi's...? Yes, its their dressing. The vibrant colors, beautiful embroidered sarees, patiala salwars, .and specially PHULKARI..and so much more! From 'Paani-da-rang' to Yo-Yo Honey Singh, Punjabi culture is picking up like never before. From food, music, celebs its raw fashion that is making an impression in the market. 

The Phulkari embroidery has made a come back....It was extensively used by the costume designers for the movie  'teri meri kahani' in the treditional suits worn by priyanka chopra .I could find only few on google .all her dupattas had a phulkari border.Embroidery is the art of forming beautiful intricate designs and motifs on fabrics with different colored threads. One of the most famous forms of embroidery is the Punjabi embroidery. The traditional embroidery of Punjab is known as Phulkari. The name itself means growing of flowers. Thus, the motifs and patterns of Phulkari essentially contain floral designs and motifs. Bright color combinations are used for the floral patterns and they can be seen in almost all traditional attire.

Phulkari, is an embroidery technique from Punjab (India) and literally means flower working. Thus, the motifs and patterns of Phulkari essentially contain floral designs....in bright colours..

According to Punjabi wedding customs, the bride is supposed to walk to the mandap under a phulkari woven dupatta which would be held over her head by her brothers.  Traditionally a Phulkari is woven by close family members of the bride. The embroidery is done on the wrong side of the cloth, and the pattern is controlled by counting of the thread.  The craft reflects the rich and colourful culture of the region.

Since Phulkari Dupattas are full with embroidery, the idea is to go heavy on dupatta and keep your suit simple. Being a traditional form of art, the style is neither easily available and is relatively on the expensive side.

The Princely state of Patiala is known for its handicrafts, juttis ( The jutti or Punjabi Jutti is a type of footwear of Punjabi origin that is common in North India and Pakistan.) and parandies (Parandi are a type of hair accessories, typically associated with the Sikh community. No Sikh wedding would be complete unless the bride wore a parandi.). And now the phulkari embroidered suits, stitched in quintessential Patialvi style is fast catching up in in popularity in India and among the Non Resident Indian Punjabis. phulkari is fast catching up with the foreigners as well, who do not forget to take one during their visit back home.

Even though the textile industry today, is imitating this art with the help of machines, phulkari work has almost disappeared in its original form, due to the partition of India and Pakistan.

The word phulkari usually indicates the shawl that was loomed and embroidered to cover women's heads or to be displayed in a gurudwara (Sikh temple).

When the embroidery work was covering the whole surface of the khaddar the phulkari was called a bagh ("garden").

Phulkari today

Nowadays phulkari are almost exclusively industrially made. They are available in cloth markets of Punjab's big cities (Patiala, Amritsar...) along with embroidered kurtas and cushions. 

Today this vibrant folk art of Punjab is now embroidered not only on shawls or dupattas but also on stolls, saris, bed covers, home furnishings, etc in bright and vivid colours. You can see many designers drawing inspiration from this art to create a whole range at fashion weeks.  Thats a kurta i have with phulkari motifs on the neck line and on the sleeves .

 These are the phulkari dupattas i have.one is cream in colour and the other one is red .both of them have similar kind of embroidery and the other picture has the close view its embroider.

  This is a BAGH phulkhari bedsheet i have in my home .it was embroidered like 80-90 years back by my mother's grand mother .My mother has still kept it with her as a treasure of her memory .the other picture shows a close view of the embroidery.

 i have t-shirt with the caption 'JUGNI' on it.The word literally means 'Female Firefly' and at the back of the shirt there is a song written in Punjabi .i wore it with my Punjabi jutti which i bought from Chandigarh and my yellow strap watch and a yellow ring(i made it).
